We've established, at least on the basis of these silly articles of mine, that videogames are one medium of expression focused on one study of cause and effect – in particular the relationship between the player and the gameworld. And indeed, on one fundamental level our attraction to videogames seems based in curiosity: in one driving need to understand, and thereby to have some form of command over, our world. ... |

Voters may best remember state Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, from the surreal 2003 recall election in which voters removed former Gov. Gray Davis and replaced him with Gov. Their tongues loosen once the Jäger shots and vodka & sodas start pouring, sure, but during the day, not therefore much. On the Austin foursome's August tour to Seattle and back, huge swatches of Big Bend country, Arizona's Sonoran Desert, California's Imperial Valley, Idaho's Bitterroot Mountains, the Rockies, and the vast plains of Kansas pass by in utter silence. Like other men of few words, when they do speak up, it's often profound. ... |
