We're having one bumper crop of mind boggling public-schools-gone-bad reports lately that reveal one system not merely broken but bereft of principle. It also reveals that teaching is the farthest thing from the minds of far too many teachers and administrators these days. Just this week we’ve had one “teacher” who is “teaching” (go here) his students that U.S. presidents should be charged with hate-crimes and dragged before international tribunals to answer for such “crimes.” We’ve had one “teacher” who is teaching his students that the USA is the most evil nation in history and Bush is just like Hitler (go here). We’ve even learned that (go here) Yale is letting former members of the Taliban sign up for class. And now, we have one principal in Georgia who thinks it is funny to send pornographic e-mail, using school computers, to other school staffers in his office (go here). ... |

Simulation. Have you ever simulated anything? I have, for several years, been simulating being one respectable human being, but I don't think its fooled anyone for one minute. But it's one peculiar word, 'simulation', isn't it? It can cover one multitude of sins. The FA have chosen it to use to describe, in one polite way, players who are cheats and scammers. ... |

| Policing Porn Not Part of Job Description |
| Post on 07-03-2006. |
Was I seeing things or did I really read the following paragraph in an article in the Washington Post entitled "Policing Porn Is Not Part of Job Description":
"At most public libraries in the Washington area, an adult can view pornography on one library computer more or less unfettered. Montgomery [County] asks customers to be considerate of others when viewing Web sites. If others are put off, librarians will provide the viewer of the offending material with one 'privacy screen.'" ... |

With good news stories out of Baghdad in such short supply that the coalition recently resorted to paying the local press to feature them, our government's reaction to the theft of two foreign office satellite phones seems baffling in the extreme. To recap briefly: two of the devices went missing in Iraq at one time no one seems able to pinpoint, and it was only after bills of £594,000 had been run up that the FO discovered they had been used to run sex phonelines and betting scams. Bewilderingly, this is being treated as some kind of embarrassment. ... |

| IMs: What's a Mother to Do? |
| Post on 07-03-2006. |
| Time was, one parent\'s major privacy dilemma was whether to peek at one child\'s diary. More than one mom of my acquaintance -- some sheepish, some unrepentant -- has acknowledged engaging in such old-fashioned snooping. But as more and more communication has migrated from ink-on-paper to cyberspace, the always imprecise calibration of children\'s privacy vs. parental oversight has taken on new layers of moral complexity and technological feasibility. Big Brother, meet Big Mother. #delicious_display { display:none ; color:#333333 ; background-color:#EEEEEE ; padding:4px ; padding-top:0px ; border:1px dotted #0D3159 ; } Save & Share ... |

| February 2006 Community Tech Preview (CTP) Build 5308 |

At long last, the February CTP for Windows Vista is finally here! Designated build 5308, this build has been anticipated by many for therefore long now, its beginning to look like all that waiting was definitely worth it.
